Last night we recently had the pleasure of attending a fascinating panel discussion at another Sunderland Lit & Phil event, centred on The General Strike and it was one of those evenings that stays with you long after you’ve left the room.
Held at the wonderful Pop Recs, the event brought together a thoughtful and engaging panel, offering insight, perspective and plenty of food for thought. It’s not often you find yourself so completely drawn into a discussion of history, politics and society, but this was one of those occasions where time seemed to disappear as the conversation unfolded.
Auburn Langley, as always, was an exceptional host. Warm, knowledgeable and effortlessly engaging, she guided the discussion with real skill, creating an atmosphere that felt both welcoming and intellectually stimulating. It’s a rare balance to strike, but one that makes these events so enjoyable.
What really stands out about these evenings is the sense of community. Whether you’re deeply knowledgeable on the subject or simply curious, there is space for everyone. The audience is attentive, thoughtful and genuinely interested, which creates a brilliant environment for discussion and reflection.
In a world that often feels fast paced and surface level, there is something incredibly refreshing about taking the time to sit, listen and engage with ideas in a meaningful way. Events like this remind us how important those spaces are.
We’ve thoroughly enjoyed attending these regular sessions and would highly recommend them to anyone with an interest in literature, history or simply good conversation.
If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved locally or trying something a little different, this is a wonderful place to start. You might just find yourself looking forward to the next discussion before the current one has even finished.
